About Sheddie

Sheddie Designs specialise in breathing new life into old pieces of wood, through unique product and furniture design. Our work is designed to be eye catching, as well as being very beneficial to the environment reducing waste. We use a wide range of recycled wood and other materials and fixings, sometimes saving the history and character of the material, and other times producing brand new modern products. We strive to use 100% recycled wood in all our projects.

We manufacture a number of products available to browse on our site, with more available to buy direct from our Online Store. We also do bespoke design and manufacturing to suit our customers needs. While most of our projects are unique custom creations, almost all are repeatable so if you see anything you like please feel free to get in contact with me at edward@sheddiedesigns.co.uk

Below are some quick links to find out more:

Why Recycled Wood?

  1. Sustainable - There is no way around it, the use of wood in design is the direct cause of deforestation. And while nowadays there are managed forrests that are much more sustainable, the best way to preserve as much forest as possible is to mimimise our reliance on new timber. Using recycled wood gives the material a new life, and also avoids wasting it as landfill or even being burnt.
  2. Aesthetic - Recycled wood can add a huge amount of looks unobtainable by new timber. This could be because of great charachter added to the wood in a previous life such as weathering or special textures. It also opens up a wider range of materials where you can save unique coloured hardwoods reclaimed and refinished.
  3. Economic - Anyone who has ever had to buy new timber will know that it can cost a fortune! Comparitively by using recycled material you can access a wide range of woods a fraction of the cost. This makes it easier to experiment with new ideas and designs withought the worry of wasting expensive new wood. It also opens up a range of new options for the use of exotic hardwoods that, if bought new, would simply not be economic to use.

Where does it come from?

We get our wood from a number of sources. We get quite a lot of wood donations from freinds, family and even customers. When they hear what we do they love the idea of turning their waste product back into something unique and useful. If you have some interesting wood and are in the Mid Sussex area, feel free to contact us to see if we can do anything with it.

Asside from donations, we do also buy good quality second hand wood from individuals and buisnesses getting rid of it. This comes in the form of wood ofcuts, broken wood products or other reclaimed materials.

We also use Comunity Wood Recycling projects who do fantastic work with reclaiming wood from contruction sites and all over the place for resale. You can find out more about them here: www.communitywoodrecycling.org.uk

What is available?

Of course we aim to use 100% recycled wood, but that doesn't mean low quality.

Hardwoods:

We regularly stock reclaimed Oak, Iroko, Beech, Walnut and other hardwoods. We source these in the form of Old tables, worktops, window frames, shelves, floorboards, fence posts, off-cuts from other projects and so much more.

As well as the common identifiable hardwoods, we also source a lot of tropical hardwoods where the exact species cannot be identified. These often have fantastic colour and grain pattern as can be seen in some of our products. These often come in the form of shipping containers and crates, garden structures etc.

Softwoods:

We also stock reclaimed softwoods such as pine, yew and more. These again come from a number of different sources such as furniture, floorboards, shipping pallets, tables, cladding etc. These are great for slightly lighter products.

Engineered wood:

Most of our work is made from solid wood, however we sometimes use manufactured wood products such as plywood or MDF in projects when appropriate. We still aim to use as much recycled wood as possible, and source plywood used from building sites and shipping crates, as well as of-cuts from other businesses.
